  15. A Final Deadly Barrier

  17. <p>    For the thousands of illegal immigrants entering the U.S.
  18. from Mexico each year, the journey north is harrowing enough.
  19. But just across the border in California, they encounter a final
  20. and at times fatal obstacle. Weary and bewildered, pursued by
  21. the Border Patrol and sometimes carrying small children, as many
  22. as 150 people a night dart out into the hurtling freeway
  23. traffic. Already, seven fatalities have been reported this year.
  24. Since the body count began in 1985, the total has reached an
  25. alarming 71.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>    To reduce the carnage, crews are trimming back shrubbery
  28. along the freeway, a sign has been installed alerting motorists
  29. to watch for pedestrians, and a $180,000 freeway lighting system
  30. will be installed later this year.
